Blackwater Bend Farm was purchased in 2010 by Dianna and Jeff. We raise a herd of registered Belted Galloway cattle so that we can produce grass-raised and grass-finished lean beef for local consumers. The herd is growing and we have beef for purchase.
Our beekeeping operation operates about a dozen hives located in several locations around the farm. We have been producing honey for sale since 2013. We started our apple orchard in 2011, with 35 apple trees planted. Although we lost most of the trees planted in 2012 due to the severe drought, we now have more than 120 trees, with half of these trees in production. Nine varieties are in production. Our first crop of apples were harvested in 2016! Additional varieties were planted in 2019 and more are planned in 2020.
Our History
The original land patent for this farm was issued by the Federal government in 1854. For most of its history, the current 80 acres formed the heart of a traditional family-owned farm. Many different families have been raised here through the decades.
Blackwater Bend Farm is one of three farms located on a dead-end road. Dianna's father owns the farm north of us. Her grandfather owned the third farm when she was a small girl. In fact, Dianna lived on her grandfather's farm for several years, and spent summers on her father's farm as she grew up. As a result, there is a strong family connection to this region along the banks of the Blackwater River.
We will explore the history of Blackwater Bend Farm as additional information can be identified. Understanding the past will help us develop a sustainable farm for our family and our friends to enjoy for decades to come.
The Beginning
Missouri became part of the United States in 1803, when the Louisiana Territory was purchased from France. Missouri became a state in 1820. However, the land was owned by the United States until it was purchased by a private landowner.
The land that became Blackwater Bend Farm in 2010 was owned by the Federal government from 1803 until October 3, 1854. On that date, Anthony Fisher purchased 80 acres at the U.S. Land Office in Boonville, Missouri. The title abstract indicates that Mr. Fisher took possession of the land as a single owner. However, when the land was sold on May 29, 1857, the title abstract indicates that Anthony Fisher and his wife, Martha A. W. Fisher, were the owners at the time of sale.
The farm has transferred hands many times, although there have been several long-time owners in its history. We will add information to the history as we uncover it.
